everyone dissociates

hello!

Have you ever been driving down the road, maybe to work or home and realise that you have arrived already. Your on your drive way yet you don't really remember the drive home, the route you take is such a familiar task that you don't really have to think about it. Your brain doesn't have to tell you each step you must take - this is a type of dissociation.

Getting so absorbed in a good book that you forget about the world around you. Time seems to fly by and before you know it you've been reading for two hours although it only feels like minutes - this is a type of dissociation.

Reading a book and completely zoning out to realise you have no idea what you just read - this is a type of dissociation.

Everyone dissociates to some extent, its only when this dissociation persists under great fear and trauma that it becomes a problem. My dissociation is very similar to those above except it happens a lot more often and in those moments someone else is present and takes over - an alter.

When your mind is overwhelmed and stressed it often wants to detach from itself so to speak. This could be laying on the sofa with a tub of ice cream and watching trash tv, forgetting about the world around you. Or this could be a part of you who is trapped at a much younger age and to de-stress just wants to colour in and do some drawings. Both are dissociation.

Dissociation is a defence mechanism and when this is used over and over again as a very small child it can become the only defence mechanisms, coupled with trauma it will ultimately become a dissociative disorder of sorts - there are 5 recognised dissociative disorders.

Although not widely spoken about these disorders are not 'rare' or 'abnormal' they are the result of a Childs brain being unable to cope with there surroundings.

DID alone affects 1% of the population, thats approximately 75 million people!!!
Yet if you ask someone if they know what dissociation is I doubt there would be many people who could tell you.

Dissociation needs to be more spoken about, and I don't mean in Hollywood movie plot twists, I mean real people functioning in life, succeeding and being amazing. Only then may the fear and
stereotype will lessen and more people can be open
and honest about there own experiences to friends
and loved ones.
